Why vote?

The stakes are significant. EGSA-AÉDÉ members Robert Head and Mark Ingham are competing for the Graduate Student Rep to the University Board of Governors. Two years ago Robert Head was elected to this Rep position uncontested, 46 votes yes, 12 votes no. That means that less that 1% of grad students voted. Yet the Board rep position is of vital importance to all grad students. He or She is the only direct student voice we have in the room when decisions are made to do things like cut library subscriptions and maximize tuition increases. When other universities in Canada are cutting tuition to attract foreign talent to Canada, the uOttawa Board plans to raise tuition by 15% for foreign students this year while cutting our access to research journals. Are you now unable to access key journals for your lit review? Do you feel betrayed, having signed up to a first-tier research university, only to see your research access cut while tuition surges? Start getting involved if you have the time. At the very least, please vote. Every vote counts.
